Wow. thank you EVERYONE for so many happy-birthday messages.
Just want you to know that it hits home. It touches me very deeply.

I'm kind of stunned right now thinking about this whole internet thing. How, way long ago this 2 year old kid first picked up a pencil and scribbled some circles on the back of a piece of discarded assignment-paper my dad brought home from the school where he worked as a teacher. How over those awkward adolescent years when at times I hated my talent for drawing because I thought that was the only thing of value people saw in me and I didn't think it was valuable at all. But for some reason I could never quit. Through my college years when I finally grabbed hold of a dream, to be a professional artist. The frustration of seeing how far I had to go in skill and experience. And on then till today.

Life's still a struggle. I still always wish I were better at my art. Wish things were more stable and sustaining. Wish I had more time. But I figure we're all in that together right?  Life wouldn't be interesting without the struggle and through that struggle I've been able to connect to so many amazing people across the wide expanse of this earth. To give something to others, to be influenced by them in return.  To think that people in the Philippines or the Netherlands or Italy would know me or care enough to wish me "Happy Birthday"?!  That's something that the two year old me could never have fathomed.  That's something that I feel compelled to return in some way or fashion.

So.

Thank you.

Art I like #2

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 2, 2012, 11:39 AM
:iconmefitica:
Mefitica

The Italian artist Mefitica has a playful and fluid sense of line that I find very appealing.  Her technique reminds me of Audrey Kawasaki but her character and style is all her own. Meftica's work is most compelling when her figures are simplified  to their geometric essence. This gives them a very intensional, designed feeling, almost like they are icons. In her best pieces there lives a sense of delicate confidence.

Art I like #1

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 2, 2012, 8:38 PM
I'd like to call attention to an artist I just came across:

:iconyocco:
Yokko

Within the vast oceanic depths of anime art on deviantart, Yokko caught my eye. Just look at her compositions, amazing use of lush color and well designed shape making and I think you'll see why. Add to this unusual perspectives and incredible draughtmanship and you have someone you should be watching. Her compositions are complex and busy but through use of contrasting colors and value (that is, lights and darks) she manages to keep them from being disorienting or feeling messy- truly impressive.

I'm definitely inspired by her work. Check it out:

Change of plans...

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 18, 2012, 3:53 PM
I was surprised find that I got some push back on my idea to buying commenters a premium account. After some thought about how I could give something back to the DA community I've decided to change directions- I can be a bit impulsive.

A few people requested more painting tips. I am going to make a goal to get more of those out.  Also I'm going to try to highlight other artists in Journal entries and explain what I like about them.  Hope these things can be helpful!

I'm going to try a new thing...

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 12, 2012, 10:21 AM
In 2012, I'm going to gift the first commenter on new work I upload a one month Premium Membership.  I don't want this to be some sort of gimmick to get more comments so if it turns into some kind of spam-fest, I'll stop doing it. I'm just looking for a way to say thank you to all the people who have encouraged me to keep painting since I joined DA. I'm not going to make a big deal about it and post journal entries of who got what, I'll just handle it discretely. I'm not wealthy by any stretch but if I can in some small way help a young artist out then I'd love to do that.

We'll see how it goes. I reserve the right to change my mind at any time.

Happy New Year

Seize the moment to do that stuff you never get around to doing.
This year let's all treat each other a little kinder and with a little more love.

Mega Portrait update

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 15, 2011, 12:40 PM
So, it's been over a year and a half since i started the mega portrait thing. A children's book, solo show and tons of other stuff got in front of it, but I am finally almost done with drawing all 400+ people who submitted photos. I have 10 faces left to be exact. Next it's scanning and photoshopping to put them all together. Then I'll post the whole deal. It's pretty cool to have stacks of these drawings, each on a blank note card.

Will post SOON.

Happy Holidays

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 5, 2010, 11:48 AM
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and New Year everyone. How ever you celebrate the season I hope you have a splendid time and create some great memories.

Speaking of memories, take a look at "A Little Winter Magic", older piece I did some years back. It's still one of my favorites.
