Where The Heart Is +WIP+ by jasinski Where The Heart Is +WIP+ by jasinski
I am trying something a bit different:

*****This piece isn't finished yet***** I am stuck as to where I should take it, so I thought I'd post it here to get some feedback. What does it need to make it 'done'?
---------
It's part of a solo show entitled "Tête à Tête" I am doing in November in Portland Oregon.

Firstly, I am totally digging the color pallet on this and I love the textural treatment you’ve given the piece. It gives the two figures an earthy and calming feel which I think enhances the symbolism and their expressions. You’ve managed not to make this sappy or overly sentimental which is refreshing.

Some minor points. The black bird is a nice contrast but isn’t going to fit very comfortably in the birdhouse the girl is holding and he sort of has that look like he’s not sure either. I don’t think the horizon line with the little trees works here. If this doesn’t sound cheesy – a white picket fence since you have a home thing going on here anyway. I know it might be cliché but the couple isn’t. Or maybe a wrought iron fence a la the Addams Family which would put the black bird color in there to tie the image together and you could have fun with design elements. Maybe the little birdhouse could mimic whatever design you would make for the fence.

But overall – it’s a sweet and warm painting. I like it and I hope your show does well. Openings are so exciting.

I love this, the color, their postures, everything is lovely. I have seen your "finished" version also, they are both very nice! :)

I don't think it's done...
I like the color palette and texture but, I'm waiting for the details, the fullness, the hints of life... particularly in the faces. (ie, the whole head of the bird, the couple's eyes and her mouth)
It's a great composition over all. I'm not sure about what others are saying about a fence. I agree that just a little bit more could be going on on the horizon between the couple. (maybe a small house (Victorian or Frank Lloyd Wright inspired) to echo the bird house and tie in the two concepts visually.

I agree with Jyndorel... I didnt realize that the horizon line was not a fence, though would fit much better if it was.

i think, it will be better if theres heavier shadows for the figures then more highlight for the crow and the bird house for emphasis......well,,,,just a suggestion....but this piece is so cool.... ^^
i love the concept ^^

I think a big part of the draw to the male character, aside from his bright shirt, are his blue eyes. They probably stand out to me more than anything else in the painting. I think if you are going to play with the color of the female character's shirt, a blue that shares some of the same shade as his eyes would work to draw it all together. I don't think black will help, and I'm not sure that black works well if this is a sex and creation metaphor. (Also, if you offset the birdhouse by a more exciting shade, you will not need to change its color as it balances the bird well already.)

Additionally, I think it would be nice to set the character more in a location. The background is kind of vague and it wouldn't do to make it draw your attention too much from the characters but I didn't notice the trees until someone else commented on them.

Finally, I think the tension in the piece is stronger if there is no strand between the bird and birdhouse (someone suggested string). I like that there is a clear visual place for the bird to go and it hasn't reached it yet. (Also adds to the element of playful sexual tension.)

I think that concept-wise, it looks pretty complete. I can't really advice you much in the technical aspect, but I suppose that something small and bright like another small bird in the background might be a nice subtle detail.

When I saw this, I was reminded of this other work, that seems to have a similar meaning: [link] Thence my idea of painting a smaller, brighter bird. Good luck!

Btw, I always get amused at your characters' small red noses, I think they're so hilarious. :aww:

It seems like it could use more color... its a tad bit bland and dull. Usually your paintings are colorful and diverse but this seems drab in comparison. Maybe not more color necessarily but definitely flesh it out a bit more. Like maybe just freshen up whats already there?

For me, the belly of the boy is really light as if someones shining a light on him or some sort of light is coming from his belly.

IMHO blue to help offset the oranges and browns. Darker or black dress?

perhaps a bigger contrast in sky and earth? What, no puffy clouds? You usually put clouds in your skies, but maybe you wanted something different for this enviroment. I really like those little trees on the horizon but it took me a long time to notice them, is that the subtly you want? I also love the eyes of the couple.

I love the concept of this piece, I hope you are happy with the finished product!

i think you should put a little worm i the beak of the bird, as like sperm haha! maybe a couple of tiny birds flying in the background so it's like other birds are finding their way to a better place.
also i think you should make the background darker as it'll bring more attention to the foreground and make it stand out more. and make the girl stand out more with highlights- that'll probably sort it out actually.
the stomach of the guy is quite bright which is kind of confusing, so i think you should make them both a bit brighter with highlights/brighter colours.
hoped that helped. love the picture still though!

I can't tell if the man is happy or uneasy. Kinda like life.lol

Obviously im not a real artist or anything like that but i feel the contrast between the black bird and his bright orange shirt draw alot of attention over to that side of the painting and if you made the ladys shirt brighter it would kind of even it out. Yeah i get it is a WIP but a nice background would really bring the picture together

I'd say I'm far more drawn to the man in the picture than the female, which makes it a little unbalanced. I was trying to think of things you could do and the only idea that came into my head was to make the birdhouse blue. I don't know if that's not the direction you want to go in, but I thought I'd let you know.
