*****This piece isn't finished yet***** I am stuck as to where I should take it, so I thought I'd post it here to get some feedback. What does it need to make it 'done'? --------- It's part of a solo show entitled "Tête à Tête" I am doing in November in Portland Oregon.
Firstly, I am totally digging the color pallet on this and I love the textural treatment you’ve given the piece. It gives the two figures an earthy and calming feel which I think enhances the symbolism and their expressions. You’ve managed not to make this sappy or overly sentimental which is refreshing.
Some minor points. The black bird is a nice contrast but isn’t going to fit very comfortably in the birdhouse the girl is holding and he sort of has that look like he’s not sure either. I don’t think the horizon line with the little trees works here. If this doesn’t sound cheesy – a white picket fence since you have a home thing going on here anyway. I know it might be cliché but the couple isn’t. Or maybe a wrought iron fence a la the Addams Family which would put the black bird color in there to tie the image together and you could have fun with design elements. Maybe the little birdhouse could mimic whatever design you would make for the fence.
But overall – it’s a sweet and warm painting. I like it and I hope your show does well. Openings are so exciting.
I don't think it's done... I like the color palette and texture but, I'm waiting for the details, the fullness, the hints of life... particularly in the faces. (ie, the whole head of the bird, the couple's eyes and her mouth) It's a great composition over all. I'm not sure about what others are saying about a fence. I agree that just a little bit more could be going on on the horizon between the couple. (maybe a small house (Victorian or Frank Lloyd Wright inspired) to echo the bird house and tie in the two concepts visually.
